Fitness Mat Cleaner:How To Make A DIY Natural Spray

How often do you clean your yoga, pilates or fitness mat? Do you use a shared mat without knowing if it has been cleaned? Do you carry a fitness mat cleaner?

It pays to keep your mat clean and fresh, so you can stay healthy, fit and active. Here, you’ll learn how to make a fitness mat cleaner you can take with you anywhere.

Whether you are balancing and bending in a yoga or pilates studio, working out at the gym or exercising in your own home, your fitness mat is there for you.

It provides you with protection, comfort and acts as a sanitary barrier between you and your training surfaces. However, body sweat and oils, as well as germs from your hands and feet are easily collected.

DIY Fitness Mat Cleaner

This all natural spray uses essential oils which contain antimicrobial (antibacterial and anti-fungal) elements and scents that promote relaxation and relieve tension.

Simply combine the following ingredients for an eco-friendly and germ-free clean:

  • 2 cups of distilled water
  • ¼ cup of white or apple cider vinegar (optional)
  • 10 drops of antimicrobial pure essential oil (tea tree, eucalyptus, myrtle)
  • 10 drops of aromatic pure essential oil (lavender, lemon, rosalina)

(Vinegar is optional for a more powerful anti-microbic clean and can be quite a funky smell for some. You could replace it with a few tablespoons of citrus juice such as lemon, lime or orange.)

Fill a small mist spray bottle with the solution and shake.

Once you’ve finished your workout, you can easily spray your fitness mat, wipe it dry with a soft cleaning cloth and keep your cleaning solution in your studio or gym bag for the next clean.

(Consider a well-ventilated area when spraying and wiping your mat in case others are sensitive to the smell.)

You can place the remaining mixture into a tightly sealed container and use to refill your spray bottle when empty.

Alternatively, place it into a separate spray bottle to use in your home to clean and deodorise your shoes or other fitness equipment.

If your mat requires a deeper clean, add several drops of essential oil and white vinegar (or citrus juice) to a shallow tub of distilled water, immerse fully for a minute (don’t let it get waterlogged), remove it and hang somewhere convenient to drip dry.

You can leave in direct sunlight which will help it to dry and naturally free it from microbes and smell; however, remove your mat as soon as it’s dry because it may start to deteriorate if left for an extensive period of time.

This perfect DIY fitness mat cleaner pairs amazingly with a Phatmat, just wipe ‘n’ go.
